Clean Cut Ethiopia: Transforming Surgical Safety

Funding awarded: £12,000 | Project led by Mr T. Weiser

Objective: Launched in 2020, the Clean Cut Ethiopia initiative aimed to improve surgical safety and reduce complications in Ethiopian hospitals by implementing scalable, sustainable infection prevention standards.

Outcome: In 2021, the Clean Cut Ethiopia initiative achieved remarkable success in improving surgical safety across five pilot hospitals.

  • Achieved a 64% increase in compliance with infection prevention standards in five pilot hospitals
  • Reduced surgical infection risk for patients by 35%
  • Improved maintenance of sterile fields by 49%
  • Increased instrument sterility confirmation by 50%
  • Expanded the program nationally, enabling wider adoption of the Clean Cut protocol across Ethiopia's healthcare system
  • Developed improved online resources to support broader implementation

Supporting South Sudan’s First Paediatric Surgeon

Funding awarded: £6,500 to Dr Betty

Objective: At the time of application, South Sudan, a country of over 11 million people did not have a single trained paediatric surgeon. The funding awarded aimed to address this critical gap by funding the first year of Dr Betty’s five-year paediatric surgery training program to lay the foundation for sustainable paediatric surgical care in South Sudan. 

Outcome: Upon completion in 2025, Dr Betty will return to Al Saba Children’s Hospital in Juba as South Sudan’s first trained paediatric surgeon. Her operating room will have the capacity to perform 600 procedures annually with each surgery preventing an average 0 years of life lost to disability or premature death.


Rural Urology Innovation in India

Funding awarded: £11,000 | Project led by Gnanaraj Jesudian

Objective: Launched in 2022 aimed to revolutionize access to urological care in rural India through the implementation of laptop cystoscopes, a cost-effective alternative to conventional equipment.

Outcome: The initiative successfully completed clinical trials at Maulana Azad Medical College, demonstrating the non-inferiority of laptop cystoscopes and implemented the technology in three rural hospitals across Nagaland, Assam and Tamil Nadu. 

  • Reduced the cost of cystoscopy procedures by approximately 60%
  • Increased access to diagnostic urological procedures in rural areas by over 200%
  • Established sustainable training programs at each implementation site
  • Developed comprehensive online training courses available through UNICEF SurgHub and One Surgery
