International Postgraduate Deanery

The International Postgraduate Deanery (IPD) is dedicated to supporting International Medical Graduates (IMGs) in their training within the UK, as well as assisting NHS Trusts and Health Boards in the development of international doctors. Our support includes:

  • Providing comprehensive pastoral care.
  • Ensuring the highest quality of training.
  • Sponsoring IMGs for GMC registration, and aiding in their visa application process.

Our IPD training programme replaced the IMGSS and RISFP programmes, and recently celebrated its 5 year anniversary, welcoming over 2,000 enquiries and placing over 450 surgeons in training posts since its inception. For over 25 years, the College has been a pillar of support for IMGs through initiatives like IMGSS and the Overseas Doctors' Training Scheme (ODTS). In 2015, we further expanded our efforts with the launch of the RCSEd International Surgical Fellowship Programme.

By drawing on the extensive experience and insights gained from these programmes, the IPD is achieving its aim of delivering a more efficient and modernised training service for both surgeons and NHS Trusts and Health Boards.

Join us as we continue to advance the field of international medical training, providing top-tier support and resources to the global medical community.

I am excited to announce the launch of RCSEd's new International Postgraduate Deanery. The Deanery will offer Trusts the opportunity to provide high quality training to overseas doctors whilst utilising their skills and expertise within the NHS. RCSEd has over 25 years' experience of delivering similar programmes and we are keen to use this expertise to continue to deliver a world class service.

Mr Stuart Clark, International Postgraduate Dean, Member of RCSEd Council, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

I have enjoyed my role in developing the International Postgraduate Deanery and look forward to seeing it come to fruition. The Deanery will allow the College to develop its existing international portfolio and engage with our Members and Fellows around the globe while supporting the NHS.

Mr Pala Rajesh, Cardiothoracic Surgeon

The IPD Training Programme

The IPD training programme allows (IMGs) to hone their skills under the supervision of NHS educational supervisors for 12-24 months, before returning to their country of residence where they can put their training in to practice. The College aims to develop the skills of individual doctors, improve global surgical practice, and increase the training reputation of NHS Trusts/Health Boards internationally.
