The Surgical Ward Round Toolkit, aimed at enhancing patient safety on surgical wards, was developed through a collaborative effort between the Patient Safety Board of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. This initiative was made possible by a grant from SHINE (Health Foundation).
The Toolkit leverages an adapted NOTSS (Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons) system and a structured checklist designed specifically for ward rounds. Its primary objective is to reduce errors and improve patient safety on surgical wards. For a comprehensive understanding of the Toolkit’s components, please watch the introductory video. The final SHINE report 2014 describes the project and the results in detail.
Toolkit
The components of the toolkit are explained in the separate documents, downloadable below. Tool 3 - Surgical Ward Round is editable and can be adapted to suit an individual unit's needs.
Ward-round Non-technical skills for Surgery (WANTSS) e-Learning module (1 hour CPD)
Surgical ward rounds are fast-paced, covering a large number of patients with varying conditions, over a short period of time. These factors combined have the potential to impact the quality of patient care and experience. It has been shown that our non-technical skills (NTS) contribute just as much as our technical skills, if not more, to the quality of care we provide.
The Ward-round Non-technical Skills for Surgery (WANTSS) e-Learning module is designed to improve clinical performance and patient safety on surgical ward-rounds. On successful completion of the module, you will be able to download a Certificate of Completion confirming that you have been awarded 1 hour of CPD.
