Edinburgh Surgery Online

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh teamed up in 2007 to deliver the MSc in Surgical Sciences. This part-time online distance learning programme has been quality assured and enables trainees to gain educational credits from the University of Edinburgh, validated by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The course also supports the trainees' professional accreditation, as the first two years follow the UK Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme, thereby preparing students for the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) examinations. The programme has gone from strength to strength, with over 100 students enrolling annually and around 250 students matriculated at any one time over the three-year programme. Our graduates have also achieved significantly better pass marks in their MRCS examinations than non-Edinburgh Surgery Online trainees.

In 2011, the ChM in General Surgery was successfully launched. Based on the UK Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum, the programme provides the opportunity for trainees in General Surgery to select advanced modules relevant to their declared subspecialty and supports learning for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) examinations. In 2012, the ChM in Urology and the ChM in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery were launched, followed by the ChM in Vascular & Endovascular Surgery in 2013, and most recently, the MSc in Primary Care Ophthalmology and ChM in Clinical Ophthlamology.

The three-year part-time online MSc programme in Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors was launched in 2018 in partnership with the University of Edinburgh, as part of the Edinburgh Surgery Online suite of Postgraduate eLearning programmes. The course aims to support all graduate healthcare professionals (ranging from nurses to surgeons and anaesthetists) in using evidence-based tools and techniques to improve the reliability and safety of everyday healthcare systems and processes. The Role of the Edinburgh Surgery Online Tutor

The role of the Edinburgh Surgery Online tutor involves actively engaging with students on asynchronous discussion boards typically spanning a period of five weeks. Support for students normally requires the tutor to log into the website no more than 2-3 times a week, each session lasting less than an hour.

Prior e-learning experience is not required, and you will receive support from module leaders, academic facilitators, and the administrative office of Edinburgh Surgery Online. CPD credit is provided by the RCSEd, and a modest stipend is available to cover any personal costs associated with supporting the programme.

We ask that all MSc in Surgical Sciences tutors have passed their MRCS exam and that all ChM tutors have completed their surgical training and hold a consultant or equivalent post.
