The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh awards a number of medals to members and fellows to celebrate their success. Medals are awarded through application, nomination, and most commonly, examination performance.

George Gray Youngson Medal
Performance Based Selection
The George Gray Youngson Medal is awarded to the highest placed graduate in the MSc in Patient Safety and Clinical Factors.
There is no need to apply for this medal as the selection is performance based.
Harold Stiles Medal
Performance Based Selection
The Harold Stiles Medal is awarded to the highest placed graduate in the ChM in trauma and orthopaedics.

James Hogarth Medal
Performance Based Selection
The James Hogarth Medal is awarded to the highest placed graduate in the ChM in Vascular and Endovascular surgery.

Lister Surgical Sciences Medal
Performance Based Selection
The Lister Medal in Surgical Sciences is awarded to the Highest Placed graduate of the MSc in Surgical Sciences programme during an academic year.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Medal
Performance Based Selection
The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Medal is awarded to the Highest-placed graduate ChM in Clinical Ophthalmology.
The ChM in Clinical Ophthalmology is an online distance learning postgraduate degree programme developed in partnership between The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, The University of Edinburgh and NHS Education for Scotland.

Sir David Brewster Medal
Performance Based Selection
The Sir David Bewster Medal is awarded to the highest placed graduate in the MSc in Primary Care Ophthalmology Edinburgh Surgery Online course.

Thomas Annandale Medal
Performance Based Selection
The Thomas Annandale Medal is awarded to the highest placed graduate in ChM in general surgery.

BAPS Medal
Performance Based Selection
The BAPS medal is awarded to the candidate who achieves the highest marks during the diet of the BAPS diploma.
There is no need to apply for this medal as the selection is performance based.
GB Ong Medal (UK)
Performance Based Selection
The G B Ong Medal for the United Kingdom is awarded to the candidate who achieves the highest mark in the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in General Surgery.

Li Shields Medal
Performance Based Selection
The Li Shields Medal is awarded to the most outstanding candidate of the Clinical Component of the JSF Examination in General Surgery.
There is no need to apply for this medal as the selection is performance based.
Patrick Magee Medal
Performance Based Selection
The Patrick Magee Medal is awarded to the highest scoring candidate at the JSF Examination in Cardiothoracic Surgery which is held with The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong.

The Patrick Magee Medal is in memory of Mr Magee, who was a lead examiner for Cardiothoracic examinations at RCSEd.
Joint Surgical Colleges Medal
Performance Based Selection
The Joint Surgical Colleges Medal is awarded each examination diet to the highest scoring candidate of the Section 2 Examination in General Surgery. The medal is to be presented to the candidate at his/her Diploma ceremony.

BASICS Medal

The BASICS medal is awarded to the highest scoring candidate in the Diploma in Immediate Medical Care examination.

GB Ong Medal (HK)

The GB Ong Medal is awarded to the highest scoring candidate of the Intercollegiate Examination in General Surgery Section 2.

Muthusamy Medal
Performance Based Selection
The Muthusamy Medal is awarded to the highest scoring candidate of the Part II Ophthalmology Examination. The medal is presented at a Diploma Ceremony.
Dean’s Medal (Overseas)
Performance Based Selection
The Deans Medal (Overseas) is awarded to the most meritorious candidate in the Part 2 MFDS exam from all overseas exam’s diets ran from January to December each year.

John McDonald Medal

The John McDonald Medal is awarded to highest scoring candidate of the M Orth overseas diet in the previous academic year.

This John McDonald Medal was created by Professor Jim McDonald, former Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, in memory of his son.

John Smith Medal (Overseas)
Performance Based Selection
The John Smith Overseas Medal is awarded to the highest scoring candidate of the Part 1 MFDS Examination in each of the two international diets that take place annually.
There is no need to apply for this medal as the selection is performance based.
The John Smith Medal is named as such to commemorate the pioneering work of John Smith, who delivered the first lecture course on dentistry in Scotland, and founded the Edinburgh Dental Dispensary, which became the Edinburgh Hospital and Dental School. John Smith also dedicated his life in support of the College and acted as President from 1883-1885.

M Orth UK Medal/William Houston
Performance Based Selection
The M Orth UK Medal, also known as the William Houston Medal, is awarded to the highest scoring candidate of the Part II Morth UK exam diets from the previous year.
The medal is awarded at the British Orthodontic Conference, or at the awardee's diploma ceremony.
There is no need to apply for this medal as the selection is performance based.
This has been named to commigrate the accomplishments of William Houston, an Orthodontist who was born in Edinburgh and proudly supported the College in his life and his career.

MGDS Medal
Performance Based Selection
The MGDS Medal is awarded to the candidate who achieves one mark off the highest maximum mark achievable on the Part II MGDS examination, in either a UK or International exam diet in the previous year.

MRD UK Medal
Performance Based Selection
The MRD UK Medal is awarded to the highest scoring candidate of the Part 2 Membership Diploma in Restorative Dentistry examination. All those who took part in the UK diets from the previous year will be considered. The awardee will receive their medal, and cash prize, at their diploma ceremony.
There is no need to apply for this medal as the selection is performance based.
This medal is awarded in partnership with the Medical and Dental Defence Union Scotland.

MRD Conjoint HK Medal
Performance Based Selection
The MRD Conjoint HK Medal is awarded to the highest scoring candidate in the conjoint RCSEd / FCDSHK examination in the previous year.

This medal is awarded in partnership with The College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong and the Wright Health Group.

Tyson Medal
Performance Based Selection
The Tyson Medal is to be awarded to the candidate with the highest cumulative mark in the UK diet of the Membership in Prosthodontics non-conjoint examination.
There is no need to apply for this medal as the selection process is performance based.
This medal has been made possible by the generous endowment by the Tyson family, in memory of Kenneth Tyson, who was a well-renowned Prosthodontist at Edinburgh Dental Hospital.

China Medal
Performance Based Selection
The China Medal is awarded to the trainee, who submits the best paper describing original clinical, epidemiological or laboratory research of demonstratable significance for surgical patience, in any surgical discipline from Hong Kong or mainland China. The most highly regarded written and oral presentation will receive a $2000 HK honorarium along with their medal

FPHC Fiona Stewart Memorial Medal
Performance Based Selection
The FPHC Fiona Stewart Memorial Medal aims to acknowledge the achievements of a DipROM student during their residency. The awardee should have the highest combined score from the research presentation and tabletop exercise.
This medal will be awarded by the residential tutor and as such there is no application process.
