Elizabeth Anita Mathew Thalanany ENT Travelling Fellowship - Applications Now Open

Published: 6 January 2025

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh are delighted to announce that applications are now open for the new Elizabeth Anita Mathew Thalanany ENT Travelling Fellowship. The Fellowship intends to support UK and International members who wish to attend a course or an observership at a center of excellence, as part of their specialist training and professional development. Applications are welcome from UK and International members who are in ENT training posts. Up to £1000 is available to contribute to travel and accommodation costs.

RCSEd, is indebted to the Thalanany family, who have generously supported the creation of this fellowship, in memory of Dr Mathew Jospeh Mamman Thalanany and his daughter Anita Mathew.

Dr Mathew Joseph Mamman Thalanany was a second-generation doctor from southern India who worked as a Consultant ENT Surgeon for the NHS until his retirement. He graduated from India's prestigious Madras Medical College in 1957 and thereafter moved to the United Kingdom for further studies. On May 5, 1972, he became a Fellow of RCSEd, and later earned a Masters of Science in Medicine (Audiology) from Victoria University in Manchester. Whilst residing at Wellingborough, Northants, with his wife, Dr Mary Mathew, he worked at various NHS hospitals in Leicester and London before retiring in 1997. After his beloved wife died in 2016, he returned to India and was cared for by his daughter Dr. Nancy Austine and son-in-law Dr. Austine Eapen. He died peacefully on November 24, 2022, at the age of 91, and was buried alongside his parents in Plassanal, Kerala.

In accordance with his wish, this fellowship has been instituted in the name of his beloved younger daughter, the late Anita Mathew, who tragically died of cancer in 1997 at a very young age. Anita was a committed speech therapist with a degree from City University, London, who also loved music. She enjoyed playing the piano for the Wellingborough church choir. Dr. Thalanany fervently hoped that the medical researchers will continue to pursue his younger daughter Anita's enthusiasm and energy.

This fellowship is therefore a loving father's gift in memory of his cherished daughter, and one the College is proud to support.
