The Story Behind the Dr Jeyasekharan Travelling Fellowship
Dr. N.D Jeyasekharan was born in 1925 in Nagercoil, South India. After completing his BSC in Zoology and training as a pilot, he began his medical career, at Madras Medical College, becoming a 14th generation doctor. Working in a range of different hospitals, and under prestigious mentors, he received a C.S.I Mission Scholarship to continue training in the UK and became a FRCSEd shortly thereafter.
In 1967, he founded the Dr. Jeyasekharan Hospital and Nursing Home, which began as a small clinic but rapidly grew into a leading multi-specialty healthcare institution. Over the years, the hospital has expanded its facilities and services, becoming a referral centre for specialised surgical and medical care. Today, it stands as a state-of-the-art healthcare institution offering oncology, neurology, cardiology, nephrology and critical care, continuing Dr N.D Jeyasekharan's vision of accessible, high quality medical care for all.
Dr. N.D Jeyasekharan was a visionary in medical education and believed in fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals. He was instrumental in starting medical programmes, hosting international collaboration and mentoring young doctors. As the Correspondent of C.S.I Matriculation School, he played a vital role in its expansion into Higher Secondary School education by improving its facilities and capacity through generous donations.
Outside of his medical career, Dr Jeyasekharan worked hard to serve his community, advocating for public issues in the local media, helping to build infrastructure such as bus shelters, and leading disaster relief efforts. He also sought to improve his district by championing for wildlife and the natural world and through his active participation in a variety of clubs and forums.
The establishment of the Dr Jeyasekharan Travelling Fellowship by his children aims to continue to honour their father’s legacy by supporting healthcare initiatives, educational programmes and research in medicine.
Dr Jeyasekharan’s life was a testament to the power of vision, perseverance and service, from his early days as a young doctor training in India and the UK to his pivotal role in transforming healthcare in South India, he was driven by a singular mission: to heal, to educate, and to uplift his community. Through his hospital, advocacy for public welfare, and his commitment to education, he created an enduring legacy that continues to impact thousands. Even today, every patient treated, every student trained, and every life saved at the Dr Jeyasekharan Hospital is a continuation of his dream. His name remains synonymous with excellence in healthcare and an unwavering dedication to human welfare.
