Applications Now Open for Global CARE Grants and Scholarships
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is proud to announce the launch of Global CARE (Creating Access to Resources and Education), formerly known as the Global Surgery Foundation. Established in 2015 by Richard Montgomery, this initiative has been rebranded to better reflect our expanded mission of addressing healthcare inequality worldwide by building sustainable surgical and dental capacity in communities suffering from chronic shortages of care.
Application Period Now Open
We are pleased to announce that applications for Global CARE Grants and Global CARE Scholarships are now open. Further information can be found here and applications can be submitted here. The deadline for submissions is 26th May 2025 at midnight BST.
1. Global CARE Grants:

- Focused on initiatives improving access to surgical and dental care in low-middle income countries.
- Available funding: up to £3,000 for Small Global CARE Grants or up to £10,000 for large Global CARE Grants.
- Eligibility: Applicants from the UK and abroad can apply for funding for projects.
2. Global CARE Scholarships:

- Up to £25,000 for individual training support.
- Specifically for healthcare professionals from low and middle-income countries.
- Applicants must be core-trainees or equivalent or above (2-year post registration as a doctor / could be MRCS, post MRCS or consultant).
- May cover attendance and/or tuition fees for specialised courses, skill training programs or clinical experiences.
Our Impact So Far
Since 2015, GSF has invested over £117,000 in projects across multiple countries including Ethiopia, South Sudan, Nepal, India, Kenya, Ghana, Haiti, and more. These projects have delivered significant improvements in healthcare capacity, including:
- Reducing surgical infection risk by 35% in Ethiopian hospitals.
- Supporting the training of South Sudan's first paediatric surgeon.
- Revolutionising access to urological care in rural India through innovative technologies.
How to Apply
Applicants are required to submit a digital application form with details including evidence of need, sustainability plans, expected outcomes, detailed budget, and evidence of local support and engagement.
