RCSEd Membership in Implant Dentistry Examination Continues to Thrive

Published: 13 February 2025

The RCSEd Membership in Implant Dentistry Examination, which was introduced as a Diploma in 2010 and converted to a Membership examination in 2022, continues to grow its reputation as numbers of candidates sitting the examination is on the rise both nationally and internationally. This growth over many years is an endorsement of the quality of the examination and a testament of the commitment and dedication of the Implant Dentistry Advisory Board and the Faculty of Dentistry to raise the standard of implant dentistry both in the United Kingdom and across the world.

The team of examiners lead by Dr Mital Patel, have just returned from another full diet held in Dubai from 6-9 February 2025. This diet was particularly special as the examining team included two past chairs, Prof Shakeel Shahdad (Implant Dentistry Advisory Board Chair 2013 - 2017), Dr Ulpee Darbar (Implant Dentistry Advisory Board Chair 2017 - 2022) and the current chair, Dr Mital Patel (Implant Dentistry Advisory Board Chair since 2022).

Professor Shahdad was the first chair to take the exam overseas, Dr Darbar was instrumental in restructuring and re-writing the blueprint of the exam to align with GDC requirements and Dr Patel moved the examination from being a Diploma level examination to Membership level. Dr Patel also championed the re-introduction of the international diets following the COVID pandemic when all international activity had stopped. Despite finishing their terms, the past chairs are both still engaged as examiners.

The consistent support between the Chairs and throughout all the examination diets is Catherine MacMichael, Dental Examinations Coordinator, without whom the examination would not be as successful as it is today

The Membership in Implant Dentistry has become a regular topic of discussion amongst many colleagues externally, but is also an important agenda item during online and in-person Dental Executive meetings with international partners.  The exam currently runs in Edinburgh and Dubai and is planned to expand to Malaysia later this year. Various other international locations are also being explored for the examination, as well as integration with regulatory and licencing processes in a series of countries around the world.

RCSEd Dental Dean, Professor Grant McIntyre commented:

“The Advisory Board for Implant Dentistry are a very cohesive and proactive group within the Faculty of Dentistry seeking to ensure best practice in the field of implant dentistry across the globe. The Faculty is rightly proud of the Membership in Implant Dentistry examination with interest coming from many countries.”
