The RCSEd UK & Ireland Dental Clinical Skills Competition Grand Final took place on Saturday 29th March, and what a close call! For the first time ever we had a tie, with second and third places battled it out in a round of questions to confirm the top three.
The 10 stations involved suturing skills on wounded bananas, oral surgery flaps, knowledge of child dental development, orthodontics, placing a dental implant, laparoscopic dexterity test, intraoral scanning, denture set-up, a restorative dentistry challenge and this year a new station was added to the competition to reflect the continuing change in dentistry towards prevention rather than treatment. At this station, the competitors were provided with a sheet of A3 to design a dental health poster in order to communicate a dental health message to the public. The posters produced by the competitors were amazing as shown in the photo. Craig Brodie (Marketing and Communications Manager) masterminded this station and was even proud to show off his own creativity by producing a poster as well.
We're pleased to announce the results:
First place winner, Dora Jones of Cardiff University won the coveted trophy, RCSEd winner certificate, a digital SLR camera designed for intraoral photography, generously provided by Dr Tom Bereznicki, a competition supporter and will also receive a £300 Amazon voucher.
Winner, Dora Jones commented:
“It was a lot of fun! I expected it to be more like an exam. I didn’t expect to be placing an implant in fake bone, that was very cool.”

RCSEd would like to say a massive thank you to Straumann Group, who provided invaluable support to the competition and were a pleasure to work with. The unique technology they provided helped enrich the challenges provided for the final year dental students.
RCSEd would also like to express our gratitude to Dr Tom Bereznicki, who’s support of the competitions over the years has been greatly appreciated.
