Rt Hon Lord Ajay Kakkar KG KBE PC is President of The Thrombosis Research Institute London and Chairman of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. He is emeritus Professor of Surgery, University College London (UCL), having served as Professor from 2011-2021 and Chairman of University College London Partners Academic Health Science Partnership from 2013-2021, and Consultant Surgeon at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from 2011-2021. Lord Kakkar completed his medical degree at King’s College Hospital Medical School and received his PhD from Imperial College London. He has been a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) since 1992. His research interests include the prevention and treatment of venous and arterial thromboembolic disease and cancer associated thrombosis. Lord Kakkar was created a Life Peer in 2010 and sits on the cross benches of the House of Lords. He was Chairman of the House of Lords Appointments Commission from 2013-2018 and the Judicial Appointments Commission from 2016- 2022. He is Chairman of The King’s Fund, Chairman of UK Biobank, and Chairman of UK Office for the Strategic Coordination of Health Research. He is also Chancellor of the University of Lincoln. He was appointed a member of His Majesty’s Most Honorable Privy Council in December 2014 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2022.

Professor Rowan Parks is a Consultant HPB Surgeon and Professor of Surgical Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. Serving on the Council since 2009, he has been on numerous College committees and short life working groups. He organised the RCSEd Triennial Meeting in 2018, the annual President's Meetings held from 2013-2015, and the Lister Centenary Meeting in 2012. He has a significant interest in medical education and training. Professor Parks is the past Deputy Medical Director of NHS Education for Scotland and also past-President of both the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) and the Great Britain and Ireland Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (GBIHPBA).

Dr Clare McNaught is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon based in Harrogate. Her clinical interests include colorectal cancer, IBD and the impact of frailty on surgical outcomes. She has always been passionate about training and supporting the next generation of surgeons through her roles as educational supervisor, research mentor and MRCS examiner. In 2014, Clare founded the Younger Fellows' Committee to support surgeons in their transition from Registrar to Consultant practice. She is also the past Editor of Surgeons' News. Clare was elected to RCSEd Council in 2014 and was Honorary Secretary from 2020-2022. She was elected to the office of Vice President in 2022, the first woman to hold this role at this College.

Professor Michael Griffin OBE became President in 2018 when he was a Consultant Oesophagogastric Surgeon at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. He developed the Northern Oesophagogastric Cancer Unit which is now the largest in Europe and North America. A Council Member since 2009, he was Chair of the Joint Committee for Intercollegiate Examinations (JCIE) and Professor of Gastrointestinal Surgery at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. His clinical and research interests have been focused on early diagnosis and radical treatment of oesophagogastric cancers. He was awarded an OBE for services to cancer health care in 2013.

Mark Egan is Group Chief Executive Officer of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He has overall responsibility for all aspects of the College’s work and for Surgeons Quarter, of which he is a director. He has been in post since January 2023 and before that was Greffier of the States of Jersey from 2015 to 2022, with responsibility for Jersey’s parliamentary system. Mark is also an independent adviser to the Welsh Senedd. In his spare time, he edits the Journal of the Durham County Local History Society and is a season ticket holder at Sunderland AFC.
