The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is pleased with the progress shown in this year’s GMC report on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
College President Prof. Rowan Parks commented:
These figures are encouraging. The 43% reduction in the ethnicity disparity in fitness to practice referrals is positive, as is the narrowing of attainment gaps in specialty training between white and ethnic minority doctors. These figures show that the initiatives aimed at tackling these issues are making a difference.
There is still much work to be done, and we should not become complacent on issues relating to equality, diversity and inclusion, however, it is reassuring to see results from the work done so far. Equity gives everyone the same chances to succeed in medicine. Including staff from different backgrounds and life experiences also strengthens and enhances our clinical teams. Incorporating such diversity is better for us and for our patients.
