Two leading medical bodies have joined forces to launch a range of new initiatives aimed at those working in surgical training.
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s Faculty of Surgical Trainers has announced a collaboration with Imperial College London’s Department of Surgery and Cancer, in a move which will provide support to surgical educators around the world.
The partnership is set to commence with the launch of a range of new collaborative modules for Imperial’s online and blended Diploma and Masters in Surgical Education.
These courses use online teaching, discussion and academic work to develop surgical educators’ practice and thinking, and are aimed at those involved in the education of students and trainees in interventional and surgical specialities.
Discussing the new venture, Professor Michael Griffin OBE, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, said:
The backlog of elective procedures which has built up over the last fifteen months as a result of the pandemic means creating time and opportunity for surgical training is more important than ever, as trainees are likely to play a vital role in the resumption of elective surgery, and I believe by working with Imperial College London, we will be able to create significant new opportunities for those who wish to become surgical educators.
Patient safety is at the heart of everything we do at RCSEd, and excellent surgical training means high quality patient care, so this partnership feels like a very natural fit, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing it develop over the coming months.
The deadline to apply for this course for October 2021 entry is Friday 10 September 2021.
Martin Lupton, Vice Dean of Education at Imperial College London, said:
Over the last year the speed of change within university education has been breath-taking. Accelerated by COVID, the move into the online space has become a little less daunting, and as a University, we have been looking for programmes that will work and flourish in this new world.
To deliver a world class educational opportunity for very busy people from all over the world which can be easily and flexibly accessed is very exciting, and speaks to the mission of both institutions, to help educate people of many and diverse backgrounds to the highest possible standards.
