The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, is delighted to welcome applications for the new Joseph E Bavaria - RCSEd Aortic Travelling Fellowship. The Fellowship intends to support those undertaking a traveling fellowship in Aortic Surgery, as part of their specialist training and professional development.
Professor Joseph Bavaria, MD FACC FRCSEd, is the Vice Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, Director of the Thoracic Aortic Surgery Program, Co-Director of the Transcatheter Valve Programme at Jefferson Health, Pennsylvania USA. He is the Founder and previous Co-Director of the Penn Aorta Centre, and Past President of The Society of Thoracic Surgery. His career is dedicated to treating patients with thoracic aortic disease, ranging from valve sparing aortic root, aortic arch and thoracoabdominal aortic interventions, surgery and research. He has also established a renowned training programme in thoracic aortic surgery providing training for both residents and visiting surgeons from across the world.
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has recognised Professor Bavaria’s achievements by awarding him an Ad Hominem Fellowship in 2018. Since then he has been active in the College education events and meetings related to aortic surgery.
The Joseph E Bavaria - RCSEd Aortic Travelling Fellowship is therefore a natural next step in championing young surgeons in the expansion of their knowledge and skills in relation to cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgery.

Applications are welcome from UK and International Members and Fellows of RCSEd, who are in training grades or within 5 years of gaining consultancy grade and able to demonstrate a proven interest in aortic surgery.
Up to $10,000 (USD) * will be awarded to one successful applicant, for travel and accommodation costs associated with their attendance at their independently organised fellowship in Aortic Surgery. *funding will be transferred in £GBP to the value of $10,000 (USD)
