Awards of Membership and Fellowship of the Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare (FRRHH) Re-Opens!

Following the successful introduction of the 2023 awards, The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian (FRRHH) is delighted to announce the re-opening of applications for the second intake of awards of Membership and Fellowship. This prestigious opportunity offers global recognition for professionals in remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare.  

Applications are due by 27 September 2024. 

 The Membership and Fellowship awards represent a critical commitment towards the professional recognition of the unique skills, knowledge, and experience present in this diverse and vibrant healthcare community. Awardees will have the honour of attending an RCSEd diploma ceremony to celebrate their achievements.  

Building Professional Standards and Recognition 

Over the past five years, FRRHH has established the professional standards and structures essential for remote, rural, and humanitarian healthcare professionals. Awarding Fellowship and Membership with post-nominals not only enhances the Faculty but also elevates the global recognition of these professions. This acknowledgment of expertise strengthens the legitimacy and diversity of the Faculty, fostering a richer community and more substantial contributions.  

The Membership and Fellowship awards are among the highest accolades from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), providing international recognition for healthcare professionals in these specialised fields. Benefits include:  

  • Use of Postnominals (Member – MFRRHHEd, Fellow – FFRRHHEd)  
  • Attendance at a RCSEd Diploma Ceremony

These awards recognise dedication to the advancement of remote, rural, and humanitarian healthcare, evaluated by peers against criteria set by the Faculty. Applicants must demonstrate their contributions to these fields and align with the Faculty’s mission and objectives.  

Objective  

The objective of FRRHH is to improve the health and medical outcomes of individuals living and working in remote and rural areas of the world and those affected by humanitarian issues and crises.  

Mission  

To create a diverse global network delivering excellence and advancement in remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare through standards, education, leadership, professional development and support for research and innovation. 

Eligibility 

Applications will be assessed by peers and measured by both evidence provided and the individual’s contribution to the development of remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare.  

Membership of the Faculty 

Fellowship of the Faculty  

  • Demonstrate a clear interest and participation in remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare  
  • Demonstrate a clear interest and participation in remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare  
  • Demonstrate experience operating at the levels of Self and Team (as per the evaluation criteria)  
  • Demonstrate experience operation at the levels of Self, Team, System and Organisation (as noted in the evaluation criteria below)  
  • Provide two structured references regarding the individual’s commitment to and participation in the development of remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare  
  • To be eligible, Fellowship applicants must be at least five years post undergraduate qualification prior to application  

 

  • Provide two structured references regarding the individual’s commitment to and participation in the development of remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare  
  • Those operating at levels Self and Team will be awarded Membership.   
  • Those operating at Organisation and System will be awarded Fellowship.   
Self: 
  • Shows understanding of remote, rural and or humanitarian healthcare, demonstrates awareness and evidence of working with other teams and professions within remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare. 
Team:  
  • Supports leadership / development of teams that supports the development of remote, rural and or humanitarian healthcare. Demonstrates knowledge of establishing and leading remote, rural and or humanitarian teams. Can demonstrate impact at the team level.   
Organisation: 
  • Supports leadership / development of an organisation that supports the development of remote, rural and or humanitarian healthcare. Can demonstrate impact at the organisation level and contributes to an organisation at a senior level and  
  • Demonstrates experience of affecting and influencing policy development at organisation level.   
System: 
  • Demonstrates and evidences knowledge of wider remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare systems in which they work, including consideration of impact on local, regional, national and international populations;  
  • Demonstrates impact on remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare across a range of organisational stakeholders and perhaps even healthcare systems; 
  • Contributes to international healthcare systems at a senior level and; 
  • Demonstrates experience of affecting / influencing policy development at organisation level or healthcare system level.   

The introduction of peer-assessed membership and fellowship levels will allow individuals to demonstrate publicly the high levels of knowledge and skills they have obtained in this area and will ultimately result in improved standards of care for patients in these areas.  

Who can apply? 

You do not have to be an existing member of the Faculty to apply. Applications are welcome from anyone working in roles that support remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare, clinical and non-clinical from anywhere globally. This encompasses a very broad spectrum including the list below which is not exhaustive:

The deadline for applications is 27 September 2024, the panel will then assess and score, with awards due to be made by December 2024.
