After a recent ballot of the College’s membership, the College is pleased to announce the following appointments to Council. Angus Watson has been re-elected for a five year term, and Farhat Din and Haroon Rehman have each been elected for a five year term.
Angus, Farhat, and Haroon will take up their positions at the College’s Annual General Meeting on Friday 17 November 2023.
Professor Angus Watson is the Clinical Chair of Surgery at the University of Aberdeen. He is an honorary consultant surgeon at NHS Highland. He is an elected member of council of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Clinical Advisor to the Centre for Sustainable Delivery. He trained in Manchester, Scotland and New Zealand before being appointed as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2005. He has a doctorate from the University of St Andrews. Professor Watson moved to Inverness in 2009. His main clinical interests are emergency and colorectal surgery. His research interests are diverse. He is a co-applicant and Principal Investigator of a wide range of national and international clinical trials. He chairs the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s (RCSEd) Research Committee and its Global Surgery Foundation. His innovations include the Scottish Surgical Boot Camp and he is the instigator and clinical lead of the NHS Scotland Colon Capsule programme (ScotCap). He has created digital applications for Crohn’s and Colitis UK and Macmillan. He has an interest in developing homes for assisted living and has a number of grants to promote surgical skills acquisition using bio-synthetic tissue and augmented reality. He runs the RCSEd’s surgical skills competition. He has over 230 peer reviewed publications, book chapters and conference papers and he has delivered healthcare across the globe, most recently in Ukraine along with UK-Med.
Farhat Din is Professor at the University of Edinburgh and honorary consultant colorectal surgeon at the Western General Hospital. Farhat’s research portfolio, encompassing both basic laboratory research and clinical studies, focuses on colorectal cancer prevention by investigating energy and metabolism pathways. She has held CRUK clinician scientist and CSO senior fellowships and was recently appointed to the Bowel Cancer UK/ Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh Chair of Colorectal Cancer Surgical Research. Alongside her clinical practice and research, Farhat has a keen interest in research career development for scientists and clinicians. She contributes to several scientific committees including CRUK’s Research Careers Committee and the RCSEd Research Committee.
Mr Haroon Rehman is a Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant at the Fife Orthopaedics National Treatment Centre. He was trained on the North of Scotland training programme and completed his fellowship at Wrightington Hospital. His clinical specialist areas are general trauma, arthroplasty and revision and Haroon is an advocate for patient safety and service recovery initiatives. He is past chair of the RCSEd Trainees' Committee of RCSEd. In addition to his clinical practice, Haroon has a specialised interest in workforce wellbeing, mentorship, and surgical training.
