Several Fellows and Members of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh have been recognised in this year’s Queen’s birthday honours list for their work in healthcare, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire has gone to Professor Carrie Macewan, Lately Chair, Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, for services to ophthalmology and healthcare leadership during the Covid-19 response.
Knights Bachelor has been awarded to Professor Keith Malcolm Willett, CBE National Director for Emergency Planning and Incident Response, NHS England and NHS Improvement, for services to the NHS.
Both Martin Patrick Griffiths, DL Consultant Vascular and Trauma Surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust, and Professor Roy Archibald Joseph Spence, Consultant Surgeon, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, have both been honoured with the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire for their services to healthcare.
Mhairi Helen Stewart Collie, Colorectal Surgeon, Colorectal Surgery Unit, Edinburgh, was awarded with the honour of Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to surgery in relation to childbirth injury in Sub Saharan Africa.
Lastly, Sumit Goyal, Consultant Oncoplastic Surgeon at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board was honoured as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to breast cancer treatment and Cardiff Breast Centre Charity, while Dr Fergus Keith Jepson, Consultant, Specialist Mobility Rehabilitation Centre, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals National Health Trust, was also granted status as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to injured veterans.
