RCSEd Fellows Celebrated in Queen’s New Year Honours List

Several Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh have been recognised in the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II’s 2021 New Year Honours list for their work in healthcare and the response to COVID-19.

We thank these dedicated professionals for their help to improve care and patient safety across the healthcare sector.

Awardees of the OBE:

Dr. Raghu Ram Pillarisetti, RCSEd Surgical Fellow achieved the rare distinction of becoming one of the youngest Surgeons of Indian origin in over 100 years to be honoured by Her Majesty, the Queen with an OBE, Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in recognition of services to improving breast cancer care and surgical education in India and to UK/India relations. Professor Christopher Gerrard Moran, RCSEd Surgical Fellow, National Clinical Director for Trauma, NHS England and NHS Improvement. Professor Christopher Gerrard Moran was awarded an OBE for services to Trauma Surgery.

Myrddin Rees, Surgical Fellow (ad hom), Consultant General and Hepatobiliary Surgeon, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Myrddin Rees received an OBE for services to Liver Cancer Surgery.

Awardees of the CBE:

Professor Ian Gardner Finlay, RCSEd Surgical Fellow (WE), Consultant Surgeon, Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Professional Consultant, Health Workforce Directorate, Scottish Government. Professor Ian Gardner Finlay was awarded a CBE for services to Medical Education and Training.

Awardees of the MBE:

Professor Barbara Lesley Chadwick, RCSEd Dental Fellow, Professor of Paediatric Dentistry and Director, Education and Students School of Dentistry, Cardiff University. Professor Barbara Lesley Chadwick was awarded an MBE for services to Paediatric Dental Health. 

Philip John Cowburn, RCSEd Dip IMC RCSEd, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and Great Western Air Ambulance. Philip John Cowburn was awarded an MBE for services to Emergency Medicine and to the Covid-19 Response. 

Richard Royce Lee, RCSEd Fellow, QAM Strategic Commander, St John Ambulance. Richard Royce Lee was awarded an MBE for services to Healthcare during Covid-19 (Caerphilly, Gwent).
