Reacting to today’s announcement of an additional 350 medical school places in England for the academic year 2025/26, Professor Rowan Parks, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh stated:

“We welcome today’s announcement as an important part of the commitment to double medical school places by 2031 as contained in the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan.

Whilst places have been allocated to medical schools across the country, we support the expansion of places in areas that are under-doctored and have had problems with recruitment and retention. Encouraging students to study medicine and develop their careers in their local areas will go some way in addressing these challenges and make local healthcare services more sustainable.

We look forward to engaging with this new intake to encourage them to consider a career in surgery.”
