A number of investigative journalists have been looking into the regulation of medical devices in the UK. Their investigation has found that some patients have been given unsafe medical implants including hip replacements and pacemakers.
The President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Professor Mike Griffin, said:
“The proper regulation of medical devices is essential to ensure that patients are receiving high quality, effective medical implants. At the same time we must ensure that regulation can protect patients whilst also ensuring that new medical technologies are available to patients as soon as it is known that they are safe and effective. The MHRA and British Standards Institute must ensure that the findings of the investigation are fully looked into and that any necessary changes to the regulation of medical devices in the UK are undertaken as quickly as possible.”
