RCSEd Responds to Report Stating the NHS Could be Short of 250,000 Staff by 2030

Reacting to news that the NHS could be short of 250,000 staff by 2030, Professor S. Michael Griffin OBE, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, said

“We have known for some time that the NHS is becoming a less attractive place to work, and that there are recruitment and retention issues across the entirety of the workforce.

“We welcome the government’s pledge to increase NHS funding, but today’s news shows how urgently we need to reprioritise workforce planning to increase the supply of newly trained staff and international recruits.

“We would wish to see greater emphasis on how the NHS can continue to enhance the quality of training and continuous professional development. My priorities over the next three years of my Presidency will be to push for improvements to both the workplace and workforce and believe that a simple measure such as guaranteeing time for training will go some way in dealing with these issues”
