Surgeons' News Dental Editor Position

RCSEd are seeking to appoint a suitable individual to the newly established position of Dental Editor of Surgeons’ News. The Dental Editor will work alongside the Editor, providing dedicated editorial oversight and strategic direction for the magazine’s Dental content.  

Surgeons’ News is The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s professional interest magazine for our surgical, dental and allied healthcare membership. The magazine is a vital communication channel to inform, entertain and engage with our members, with content sourced from around the globe on a variety of subject matters. Published quarterly, Surgeons’ News features comment and opinion pieces from leading experts, reviews and reports on subjects relevant to a wide spectrum of the membership audience.  

Responsibilities and eligibility

With support from both the in-house and external editorial teams, the Dental Editor will liaise closely with key members of the Faculty of Dental Surgery’s Council and Executive Committee to ensure that the current magazine content relating to dentistry is expanded and improved, ensuring relevance to the whole Dental Team.

The role is offered for a period of three years. 

To be considered for this role, applicants must demonstrate that they meet the following essential criteria:  

  • A Dental Member or Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, in good standing;
  • Interest in and awareness of current affairs in the UK and overseas, particularly in relation to dentistry and the wider dental team; 
  • Significant professional experience in the field of dentistry, with evidence of engagement and interest beyond their own specialty;
  • Strong and current awareness of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, its ethos and objectives;
  • Experience of successfully leading and coordinating the work of a diverse team and the ability to communicate a clear vision; and
  • Strong writing, editing and interpersonal skills (past editorial experience will be an advantage).

Applicants should submit an expression of interest along with a short personal statement (750 words maximum), describing their experience and aspirations for the role, with specific reference to the essential criteria listed above.

An appointment will be made following a suitable shortlisting and interview process.
