Surgeons Quarter to provide Ten Hill Place Hotel for Medical Staff

Published: 19 March 2020

Surgeons Quarter is delighted to announce that the four star Ten Hill Place hotel is being offered to accommodate key workers that may wish to stay closer to their place of work and reduce their reliance on public transport.

For those key workers holding a valid hospital photographic identity card, accommodation will be provided on a complimentary basis at Ten Hill Place Hotel, one of the closest hotels to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Sick kids hospital

Furthermore, should hotels require to be re-purposed in the near future as hospital overflow, this has been communicated to the Chief Medical Officer.

Further announcement.

Surgeons Quarter, the operator of Edinburgh’s largest Independent Hotel and some of Edinburgh’s largest and busiest events venues is announcing that it is protecting all salaried and contracted employees for at least the next three months.

All 76 salaried and contracted personnel are being guaranteed full payment over the coming months, this giving them immediate certainty that they can pay their bills over these difficult times. Many hospitality businesses will not be in the situation that they can offer this guarantee, however Surgeons Quarter believes that this is the right thing to do to give interim assurance, whilst we all wait to see how the COVID 19 situation develops.

As a company, Surgeons Quarter does not have a company sick pay scheme and would normally operate using Statutory Sick Pay, in these unusual times, Surgeons Quarter has added discretionary sick pay at full pay levels for those team members required to self-isolate for either the seven or fourteen day period.

Scott Mitchell, Managing Director commented.

“In these uncertain and rapidly changing times, it is absolutely essential that we stand behind our highly talented workforce and give them financial certainty. When we come out the other end of this current situation we will need all of our team to be ready to regrow our business and I, the Company and the College will do everything in our power to avoid cutting our workforce.

President of the College – Professor Michael Griffin Commented

“Surgeons Quarter in normal times services College and external events and provides excellent accommodation and service in Ten Hill Place, Café 1505 and all parts of the College, these activities provide the College with supplementary funds to improve patient outcomes around the world. It is therefore only right in these unusual times that the College stands behind and protects the Surgeons Quarter team whilst being able to offer its facilities and staff in the ongoing COVID 19 fight. I have today communicated our offer to Catherine Calderwood the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland.

I would personally like to thank Scott and all the Surgeons Quarter team for their ongoing efforts in supporting the College and now the key workers within the Medical and Clinical workforce.”
