RCSEd Patient Safety Webinar Draws Record Viewers

Published: 14 February 2020

The College’s programme of educational webinars goes from strength to strength, following on from our most successful year for webinars in 2019. We delivered 57 events to an audience of over 2200 attendees and are pleased to announce on Tuesday 4th February we held our most successful webinar to date.

Titled What About You: Reflections on How You Can Make Small Changes That Make a Difference in Your Day-to-Day Working, this webinar drew upon the speaker’s experience as a leader in another safety critical industry to discuss some simple “how’s” that you can use to help you make a small difference in your own thinking and interactions to improve safety, and also improve your own wellbeing at the same time.

The webinar was presented by Captain Martin Bromiley OBE, FRCSEd (Ad Hom), Founder of the Clinical Human Factors Group. In 2005 Martin Bromiley’s late wife died needlessly during a routine hospital procedure. A subsequent independent review identified that a well-equipped operating theatre and a team of technically skilled clinicians had failed to respond appropriately to an unanticipated emergency. It wasn’t the clinicians that failed; it was the system and training that failed them by making it hard to do the right things.

As a result of Martin’s tragedy, he founded the Clinical Human Factors Group, a charitable trust which aims to raise awareness, challenge and promote best practice around human factors. Martin’s work has been recognised through awards from a number of Royal Colleges and professional bodies. In the 2016 New Year Honours list Martin was awarded an OBE for his work to further patient safety and in 2017 was awarded a Fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. You can learn more about Martins work at www.chfg.org.

The success of this webinar can be seen in its viewing statistics, with 106 people listening live, and 248 registered. Viewer feedback was very positive, scoring the webinar 4.5/5. You can view some of their responses to the webinar below.

We learnt…

‘the benefits and limitations of recognition primed decision making.’

‘the value of slowing things down when things go wrong.’

‘how to behave and act in case a mistake happened in theatre.’
