The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) has welcomed the UK Government’s proposed review of NHS pensions after tax hikes caused consultants to reduce their working hours or take retirement. The Treasury will reconsider the rate at which tax relief is withdrawn on pension savings across all sectors.
Professor Michael Griffin OBE, President of RCSEd, said:
“We are pleased that the Government have recognised the impact that the new pension tax rules have had on the ability of frontline clinical staff to deliver additional work. As a result, elective surgical waiting lists have increased dramatically across the UK, reducing the quality of line for many of our patients. We welcome a swift resolution to this issue.”
