In November 2022, the UK and Ireland surgical colleges recognised that it is imperative for us to act collectively and urgently to address the threat of the climate and ecological crisis. As part of this, we launched a compendium of peer-reviewed evidence, guidelines and policies that inform the interventions included in the Intercollegiate Green Theatre Checklist.
In celebration of the 1-year anniversary of launching the Green Theatre Checklist, RCSEd are looking to find out if how you have used it and what you or your practice have done to improve your scores.
You may have just used one part of the checklist or multiple, we want to hear it all.
It was heartwarming to hear how many trainees and surgeons have already been involved in implementing the GTC in their own departments. Many examples of how much can be done when teams work together across the MDT and with consultant support.
Audits from individual departments have looked at what aspects of the checklist can be implemented on the day and have shown that despite some initial concerns change is possible and has minimal effect on delivering gold standards of clinical care!
Some trainees set up small projects looking at individual components of the checklist receiving widespread clinical support and demonstrating significant reductions in carbon emissions as well as financial costs.
