RCSEd Dental Ambassadors: Meet Ms Alice Duke

Published: 14 February 2023 | Topic: Dental

The Faculty of Dental Surgery has a network of Dental Ambassadors who represent their dental community in 17 geographical regions across the UK and internationally, covering Mediterranean and North Africa, Middle East, East & South East Asia.

Ms Alice Duke has been our Early Career Ambassador for Western Scotland since 2020, and has been of valuable help in shaping and influencing the direction of the sector in her region. Alice is currently undertaking her specialty training in Restorative Dentistry, based at Aberdeen Dental Institute.

We spoke with Alice and learned more about her role as a Dental Ambassador and what makes her tick.

What motivated you to apply for the role?

"During core training I found accessing advice and information relating to career pathways within dentistry a bit of a minefield. Completing my MFDS with the RCSEd allowed me to pursue specialty training in Restorative Dentistry, through which I gained an interest in mentoring and teaching.  I applied for role of Early Career Ambassador with the aim to share information with newly and recently qualified dentists about the opportunities within dentistry to progress academically and clinically."

What has been the most enjoyable part of being an Early Career Ambassador?

"This role is incredibly rewarding due to the opportunity to engage within a national network of Early Career Ambassadors. I particularly enjoy lecturing and sharing my knowledge of the College and Faculty’s educational courses. The most enjoyable aspect is helping to host the RCSEd Dentsply Sirona Dental Clinical Skills Competition. It’s great to see the enthusiasm of participants year after year and a good opportunity for individuals to kick start their portfolio careers and win fabulous prizes."

What do find is unique about the role?

"From a social standpoint it’s a great opportunity to meet other members of the RCSEd Faculty of Dental Surgery. I find attending the annual Dental Ambassador Conference an excellent environment to present and discuss issues with likeminded colleagues, as well as keeping up to date with any developments, initiatives, and changes in either the Faculty or College policies."

If you could change one thing in the dentistry profession, what would you change and why?

"Education of the general public about the consequences of undertaking irreversible cosmetic treatment is very topical, and a misconception I think the profession needs to take active measures in preventing. Often, we see these patients back in secondary care, where treatment to correct the problems caused can be extremely challenging, both clinically and emotionally for the patient."
