These are built with the modern surgeon in mind, with bespoke virtual learning environments, allowing for the freedom to study flexibly and in any location that suit applicants best.

Of particular note is the MSc in Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors. This programme allows healthcare workers from all backgrounds to study online, while working full time, and gain knowledge and practical skills in Human Factors science that will improve health systems and patient care around the world. RCSEd is committed to driving standards in patient safety and care on a global scale and will continue to support this MSc for the next generation of surgeons and healthcare professionals. Gaining accreditation with the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors is significant to the strategic vision for the ESO MSc programme in Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors.

Gaining CIEHF Accreditation:

  • Increases EMPLOYABILITY of graduates – accreditation opens up MEMBERSHIP opportunities where students can join as a member and ultimately become a Chartered Ergonomist and Human Factors Specialist (C.ErgHF)
  • Ensures that the core COMPETENCIES in Human Factors and Ergonomics are addressed in the Edinburgh MSc
  • Provides greater RECOGNITION for students – allowing them to become global leaders in their field

Dr Domenica Coxon, Academic Lead, and Professor Steven Yule, Programme Director, led the intensive process of gaining accreditation.

Dr Coxon said:

Participating in the accreditation process with the Chartered Institute for Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) encouraged us to think critically about the Edinburgh MSc in Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors, to ensure that graduating students learn skills and practical tools, and are competent in all 45 competencies. The expert panel’s constructive feedback was extremely helpful, and allowed us to refine material on systems thinking, non-technical skills, and quality improvement, as well as programme flow, to better suit the needs of our students

Professor. Yule said:

Gaining accreditation means that students can be confident that the new skills they learn in Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors are aligned with established professional competencies. We are already seeing students apply new skills to improve patient safety, implement human factors design to enhance clinical systems, and even gain promotion as a result of the MSc.

Dr. Noorzaman Rashid Chief Executive of The CIEHF said:

The University of Edinburgh have created an innovative and extremely relevant master's degree course. Any student completing this course should feel confident that they have learnt the key skills required against an internationally recognised competency framework that should contribute to their career success
