Several Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh have been marked in this year’s honours list for their work in healthcare and the response to COVID-19.

The Officers of the Order of the British Empire honour has gone to two of our Fellows:

Dr Derek John Maguire, A Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Trainers and Founder of The Dentists Academy, for services to dentistry and the COVID-19 response.

Professor Mark Howard Wilson, Co-founder and Director of GoodSAM, for services to charity and the Covid-19 response. GoodSAM was founded in 2013 by leading emergency clinicians and a cutting edge coding team to radically change the response to cardiac arrest. By alerting those trained to nearby cardiac arrests while an ambulance is en-route, earlier CPR and defibrillation has saved many lives.

The Member of the Order of the British Empire was awarded to Professor Simon Paul Wright for services to patient safety in dentistry. Professor Wright is also a Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Trainers, and a Principal Partner of the Glencairn Dental Practice.

Professor Zygmunt Henderson Krukowski, former Royal Physician of 12 years, has been honoured with the title of Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order, an outstanding achievement to mark decades of dedication and commitment to care.

RCSEd President, Professor S Michael Griffin, OBE, on hearing the news, said:

It is a great pleasure to hear the news that Dr Derek Maguire, Professor Mark Wilson, Professor Simon Wright and Professor Zygmunt Henderson Krukowski have received Honours in the Queen’s Birthday List announced at the weekend. In particular Derek Maguire and Mark Wilson have been nominated for their services to the COVID-19 response which is a wonderful accolade. Congratulations to all three Fellows.  Lovely news at such a difficult time.

We thank these dedicated professionals for their help to improve care and patient safety across the healthcare sector.
